Greece: The people rise up!

Economic policy EU style. The people of Greece face disaster not of their own making as EU/IMF/World Bank austerity measures bite deep. The workers have responded with the sixteenth general strike in a year. This one has been dubbed the mother of all strikes and even the Acropolis was closed. Nothing moved on land, on the sea or in the air, as all workers unions struck for 48 hours. The aim is to block passage of a law [the first part scraped through at 9pm on Wednesday evening], which abolishes sectoral bargaining, raises taxes, slashes wages and dismisses thousands of public sector workers.

Researchers at Cambridge University using Greek government health ministry statistics have logged a 25 per cent increase in suicide since the austerity measures took hold.

GREECE: Mass protests extends across major cities

"We can stop them! We do not owe anything-We will not pay your head tax! " Many tens of thousands took part in demonstrations against the Greek government and EU imposed programme of austerity. They were particularly angry at the imposition of new levels of tax levied on workers and the self employed and mailed to their homes en mass.

ISRAEL: 500,000 on the march
