Britain's Communists call for mobilisation against big business Print E-mail
Executive Committee - Press Releases

Communists called for a ‘spring offensive’ against ‘big business policies’ at the weekend. The party’s executive committee called for support for the 8 February lobby against council house privatisation.

A month of action will focus on campaigning for the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, an end to the occupations and for the scrapping of Britain's Trident nuclear weapons. The party called for full support for the March Stop the War coalition demonstration.

'Replacing Trident will waste £25 billion' Anita Wright told the party's executive committee.

'This year sees the deepening of the global crisis, led by energy hungry countries of the EU, the G8 with the US at the head of the pack. This crisis is leading to an increased risk of regional and global conflicts and the threat of nuclear weapons being deployed

'Far from making poverty history, imperialism is widening the gap between rich and poor countries and the living conditions of the most vulnerable people are worsening.'

'In order to secure compliance with gangster capitalism and ideological web is spun' she said.

Condemning the right wing religious obscurantism that underpins the anti-scientific theory of intelligent design she said 'The ideas in Ruth Kelly's education white paper must be defeated because they preclude the establishment of new comprehensive community schools and instead encourage crackpot businessmen and all kinds of faith groups to set up selective schools.'

Presenting and organisation and finance report party general secretary Robert Griffiths said that 2005 ended with the party topping its targets for raising finance and had won a five per cent increase in party membership.

The party executive debated three resolutions that will be presented to party organisations and will provide the basis of debate that will culminate in the party's congress in June.

The main political resolution is entitled 'For a real Labour government, a left wing programme, left unity and a stronger Communist Party.

The world situation is covered in a resolution entitled 'Setbacks for imperialism and opportunities for the left.

The role of the party is covered in a resolution entitled 'A strategy for Communist Party growth'.

Congress documents will be made available on the Party website.
